The person who contacted me from the IRS seems very nice. Maybe I should just deal with him myself rather than hire a tax attorney?

Most IRS revenue officers and tax auditors carry out their job in a polite professional manner. This does not mean they are your friends. Their job is to collect taxes. They will collect them from you along with penalties and interest, unless you have a trained lawyer looking after your interests.
